Fossilized Ivory Octopus Pendant
The ocean depths hold countless creatures, perhaps none more fascinating than the octopus. They continue to amaze us with their intelligence and have become known for their mysterious and captivating deep seaway of life. In this pendant, the octopus seems to be playing in the waves, surrounded by faceted rainbow moonstone gems catching the light of the ocean.
The octopus is hand carved from ancient walrus tusk ivory. The walrus tusk has lain in the ground for 300-5,000 years, accreting colors from minerals in the soil. It takes on a range of tones, ranging from creamy white to earthy browns. The coloring and texture within the ivory are aptly suited to the beautiful and varied appearance of the octopus. The native Yupik of St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, have the exclusive right to gather the fossilized walrus ivory we use in our designs. This precious ancient material is an important part of the Yupik's economy and heritage, and it is the inspiration behind many of our most beloved jewelry pieces.
